
Julie London (nee Peck; September 26th 1926 - October 18 20th, 2000) was an American singer and actress who toured for more than 40 years. London, a torch singer famous for her smooth, melodic vocals and smooth contralto voice was a recording artist on more than thirty albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 and 1969. The first time she was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame was her recording of "Cry Me a River" which she first introduced in her debut album. London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for 1974 for her performance in Emergency! as nurse Dixie McCall. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she started her career as an actress. London's career as an actor of 35 years began in the film industry in 1944. It featured roles in the lead female in a variety of westerns. She signed a recording deal with Liberty Records in the mid-1950s. This was the beginning of her professional career in music. The album she released was her last album of studio recordings in 1969, but continued to have success as the female starring role of nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency! (1972-1979) In the show, she played alongside her husband Bobby Troup. Jack Webb produced the show.
