Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian has been a Canadian and American feminist media critic for more than 20 years. She is well-known as a public speaker. She created Feminist Frequency which is a website with videos and guest posts analyzing the portrayals of females in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic, blogger and award-winning feminist for over 10 years. Feminist Frequency examines the way women are represented in popular media. Alongside working to expose the issues surrounding the harassment and targeted assaults on women and other minorities in online spaces she is dedicated to breaking down stereotypes that are prevalent in pop culture. With a master's in the field of political and social thinking at York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public speaking engagement and has given speeches at TEDxWomen XOXO Festival as well as at The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. While a student at university, Sarkeesian became interested in the issues surrounding gender identity and women's rights at an early stage. It was a girl who wanted to create an online series that would examine how gender is represented in games. In the end, she ended up being the target of cyber-bullying. The harassment didn't hinder her. The experience only strengthened her as a journalist who is feminist. Sarkeesian has been awarded numerous awards for her contribution to feministism. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and founded Feminist Frequency. The educational non-profit explores the role of women within the popular culture stories.
